On the 10th of August 2018, Godwin was walking home after dropping off the okada (motorcycle) he uses to earn a living at a secure place, when he was randomly picked up and arrested by the Police. Apparently, there had been a fight, of which Godwin took no part whatsoever, in that neighbourhood the previous day.
He was charged to court with 4 other co-defendants on the count of cultism and remanded in Ikoyi prison shortly after. After spending over 2 months in prison, a team from the Flemer Project Initiative visited Ikoyi Prison and interviewed a number of awaiting trial detainees including Godwin. The team decided to take up his matter and represent him in court.
On the 22nd of October, 2018, a lawyer from Flemer represented Godwin and all his co-defendants, and the charge against them was struck out for want of diligent prosecution and they were all discharged.
